Title : 3PR Family

I began volunteering at Pikes Peak Parrot Rescue a year ago with zero expectations. Over the twelve months, 3PR has become my family. Everyone within the organization is here for one reason only - to do the best for the birds in our care. The bonds that I’ve formed are indescribable and the happiness I’ve seen is palpable. I get to come in and help these amazing creatures find homes where they can be wholly themselves. The work can be rough, even soul crushing at times. But it is always worth it to witness the light in the bird’s eyes when they see someone they adore. There truly aren’t words to describe the happiness and fulfillment that comes from working with parrots week after week. These animals come from all walks of life and as such can present different challenges. Some will trust instantly, others you will have to work to gain their trust. Some were immensely loved while others may have less than ideal backgrounds. However, upon entering 3PR’s doors, these birds are all loved and treated equally. We don’t expect anything from them other than to be themselves and trust us to find the perfect match for them. So, why do I volunteer with Pikes Peak Parrot Rescue? Simply put, there is nothing more fulfilling than working with birds. They make you work to gain their trust, but once gained, you are rewarded a million times over.

I had the pleasure of adopting my African Grey, Sunny, from 3PR. It was such an amazing experience and I found myself popping in just to chat and have a coffee.  I was able to see the amazing work being done and I felt compelled to be a part of it.  It's been a rewarding experience and I get back far more from the birds than I'll even be able to give.  They remind me to stay positive, be resilient and that singing and dancing can solve almost anything.

I started volunteering at 3PR after coming in for a while visiting with all the birds and seeing how everything went on and decided to volunteer after bringing home my Blue and Gold Macaw. Each bird at 3PR had their own personality and creating a bond with them kind of feels like an achievement.

I grew up around birds. I had a cockatiel named PJ and a farm with over 40 chickens, ducks, and guinea fowl. When I got older, I started my own farm; however, outdoor birds were not the same as parrots. One day in November, I looked up “parrot rescue” on Google and stumbled across the Pikes Peak Parrot Rescue. We took an impromptu trip to visit, and there I met Harvey the cockatoo. He was the coolest bird I had ever met. Harvey was adopted to an amazing home, but I credit him for my love of parrots and primarily the cockatoo species. I learned so much from 3PR. I started going every day to learn about the different species of birds, but more importantly, how they ended up in a rescue. All of them have a story. Some are sadder than others, but they all come to us for various reasons. I get the opportunity to have a powerful, positive impact on the lives of these birds. I do this by fostering. I bring them into my home for 30 days to learn their personality and give them a reset on life. I work with them on stepping up, boundaries, and eating….(yes… people don’t know that seed is bad for parrots so we have to show them what good nutrition is.) I have also received some nasty bites, but it pales in comparison to the pain that some of these birds have experienced. I also do this by spending time with them at the rescue during the week. I clean their cages as well as pull them out to play with them...to show them that not all humans are terrible. I also take part in marketing them when they come to the rescue. I do photo sessions, video, and generate an online presence to drum up interest in these beautiful creatures. Educating the community on the 3PR need as well as showcasing these birds’ stories to find them their forever homes is very fulfilling. I appreciate the Pikes Peak Parrot Rescue or allowing me the opportunity to volunteer and leave a meaningful impact on these birds.
